Discover the unsung heroines of Madison’s history during a special tour of 3 sites on Saturday, March 22 from 1 to 4 PM. “The Women Who Saved” showcases the pivotal role eight women played in preserving our city’s heritage during Women’s History Month. Tickets are on sale now via the link provided. Like many communities in America, some of the first people to step up and save buildings in Madison were women. In the early twentieth century, many women began to protect, repurpose, and share Madison’s amazing sites, but their roles in our community were essential for decades after. From Drusilla Cravens and Ellen Shrewsbury to Ann Windle, we will explore the stories and roles of women in preserving Madison.
The guided tour will be led by HMI’s Director of Programs, Jessica Spiess, and start at Dr. Hutchings’ Office, move to the Sullivan House, and finish at the Shrewsbury-Windle House. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for HMI Members, and students are free. Tickets will be available through March 21. All proceeds from this event will benefit preservation efforts for HMI’s many properties in downtown Madison. Please contact Jessica Spiess, Director of Programs, for more information at 812-265-2967.
